glorious staycation: part 3: learning to fry and other dangers

squash blossom: before

squash blossom: after

oh my.

dan. ger. ous.

you mean i can fry things at home?  right in my own kitchen?  right from my own garden?

trou. ble.

this must be why people plant zucchini.  they know the secret of the squash blossom.  i confessed to chris and dee that i had never actually consumed the delicate flower, and within seconds (i’m not exaggerating) the kitchen was once again awhirl with activity.  dee and i went out to harvest and chris whipped up the batter and started the oil.  for a moment, we debated whether or not we should return or use the left-over, home-made, blue-ribbon, so delicious, goat cheese made by my neighbor friend, jill.  we decided it was important to experiment with a variety of cheeses for the filling.  it was for the sake of science, really.  we needed bigger sample size.  and let me tell you, this was not a mistake.  thank you, jill!

whoa.  yum.

well, there weren’t very many blossoms, and there was batter left over, so we had to continue the experiment with the actual zucchini.  and then there was cheese left over.  which actually didn’t take to the batter, so chris had to make MORE batter, and then of course the experience wasn’t complete without incredibly, delicious aioli that took chris about 20 seconds to whip up.  as you can see, this was a very slippery slope.  literally.

until we were all parked around the table (mind you, this was noon-ish, after a very sloooowww morning…) in a total food coma, arguing over who had to eat the last piece of cheese.  it was just too good not to eat, but no one could bear the thought, or the guilt of, eating one more bite of fried fat.  good thing i’m eating for 2.

what we did next was the only appropriate activity for the moment: Dominion.

so, i’ll conclude the staycation trilogy with a few shots of the rest of our time together.  an  inspiring, entertaining, soul-warming few days, to say the least.  if anyone else wants to come and hold our babies, weed my garden, cook amazing food, do the laundry (seriously), play dominion, drink good wine– be our guest.  thanks, friends!

worn out in the best way!
